How the stud calculator works
The field formula
Length in inches ÷ spacing + 1 = field studs: a 24-ft wall at 16" OC takes 19. The formula assumes the first stud sits at zero and the layout walks in multiples of your spacing — chalk lines mark every stud position, and the walk beats the estimate whenever doors shift the bay rhythm.
Openings multiply studs
Every door adds a king pair and a jack (3); every window adds kings, jacks, and cripples (5); every corner adds backup studs for drywall nails (2 each). A modest 24-ft wall with one door and two windows frames with 32 studs, not 19 — the gap between the formula and reality is where framing crews earn respect.
Plates and headers
Walls run three plates: bottom plate plus a doubled top plate (the second ties intersecting walls together) — 3 linear feet of plate per linear foot of wall. Openings need headers sized to span (2x6 for typical doors, engineered LVL for wide windows). The stud count gets the glory; the plates and headers carry the wall.
